A region filled with natural wonders and magical places whose amazing beauty invites travelers to participate in an endless array of activities and experiences,   a warm and sunny place, shining with friendly people, smiling faces, an amazing array of birdlife and a magnificent view… That place where visitors, business people and locals enjoy the wonders that can only be found HERE in BAJA CALIFORNIA, a unique region.   Join us on this scenic adventure.

 

DAY 1 , Sat. Feb 11,   Depart Sarett for Baja, Mexico

Depart Sarett Nature center for Chicago O’Hare to board your flight for Cabo San Lucas. Upon arrival in cabo you are met and transferred to Todos Santos. Check in to   Los Colibris, your lovely casita overlooking the sea. Los Colibris is the ideal place for nature lovers.   is just a 10 minute walk to 70 miles of pristine, virtually empty beach, and just a 5 minute drive to delightful restaurants, shops and art galleries. Be sure to bring your binoculars since birdlife is abundant at Los Colibris. Many guests have added several species to their life list.

DAY 2, Sun. Feb 12,   Historical Tour of Todos Santos -- Local artists and beach walk

Tour the beautiful historic district and learn about the colorful Chinese, American and Mexican residents that have shaped the town over the years. Visit the galleries of several local artists who live in and draw their inspiration from Todos Santos. Lunch at Landis, home-style Mexican cuisine in a lovely garden setting. Absolutely lovely walk that shows the best of what Baja has to offer. Rolling hills of desert landscape, with dramatic views of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains to the east and the dramatic sweep of the desert meeting the ocean to the west. Stroll along the ocean, then back around the freshwater lagoon and an amazing array of bird life. Dinner tonight is at the La Coronela Restaurant at the famed Hotel California.

Day 3, Mon. Feb 13, Cactus Sanctuary, Birds and Stars

Morning: Cactus Sanctuary Today we head across the desert to a magnificent forest of cacti, where you’ll be enveloped in a world of towering, spiny forms of incredible variety and beauty. We’ll learn about all kinds of cactus, including those that are edible. We’ll return to town and make a desert lunch that features cactus salads and other delicious treats made from desert plants.
Lunch: Los Adobes Restaurant. Mexican cuisine in a beautiful cactus garden setting.
Late Afternoon: Siesta! You’re on vacation!
Evening: Champagne, Stars & Cactus Beautiful evening of bird watching and stargazing with local astronomer, followed by dinner at a terrific local restaurant. Aztec, Mayan and Greek mythologies explored while exploring the skies.
Overnight: Los Colibris.

Day 4, Tue. Feb 14, Trip to San Vicente/Mountain Potters

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the traditional way of life of the mountain ranchers in Baja. We’ll meet local potters in a true mountain oasis, and learn how Baja Californians have carved their homes and livings out the mountains for centuries. Doña Ramona will give us a pottery class while sharing her ranching way of life. Her family will prepare an incredibly delicious ranch lunch for us, and will give us a tortilla-making lesson just before dining. Driving is 90 minutes roundtrip.
Mexican Cooking Lessons with Local Chef. First, learn to make a great margarita. Second, pay attention, because you have to eat what you make!

Day 5, Wed.   Feb 15, Transfer to La Paz—Swimming with the Sea Lions
A truly incredible experience, snorkeling and playing with the sea lion pups at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes. Includes lunch, all gear and transportation. 90 minutes drive each way to/from La Paz. Dinner at El Bismarkcito, a La Paz institution!

Day 6-, Thu. Feb 16, Whale Watching at Magdalena Bay

Transfer to Magdelena Bay. About 4 hours travel. Magdalena Bay (Bahia Magdalena) is the largest wetlands ecosystem on the west coast of Baja and one of the most important in North America. The World Wildlife Fund ranks it as one of the most important coastal habitats in Mexico. The Bay is the prime calving ground for the gray whale, and January to March it is possible to see – and often pet - a large number of whales, including mothers and calves. Magdalena Bay also has mangrove forests, barrier beaches and sand dune islands, all of which contribute to the incredible scenery and biological diversity of the area.
An exciting 3 hours of whale watching   excursion is planned after lunch. Photograph the whales! Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

DAY 7, Fri. Feb 18, Whale Watching!

After breakfast we depart for another exciting 3 hour whale watching excursion. Photograph and pet the whales! Return to Todos Santos after lunch. About 4.5 hours.
Farewell Dinner at Michael’s at the Gallery..an Absolutely delicious meal prepared for you by local artist, sculptor and chef, Michael Cope.

 DAY 8 , Sat. Feb 18

Some last minute bird watching with Mindy for the early risers and then our final breakfast. Regrettably our trip ends today.We transfer to the airport for our flight to Chicago. Sarett vans will be waiting to take you back to Ssarett Nature Center.

 Not included: Gratuities for guides, drivers and maid service at hotels beverages (except tea/coffee at meals), meals unless specified, personal items i.e. laundry etc., airport departure taxes not included with air tickets, any services not included in itinerary, any costs incurred due to canceled or delayed flights, acts of nature or other happenings beyond the control of the tour operator. i.e. If a trip must be extended or an itinerary modified due to weather, road conditions, political or civil disputes..etc, all associated costs including non recoverable costs are not included. You must obtain travel insurance to cover such costs.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

RESERVATIONS: for this tour are made by Travel Leaders/ Ludlow Travel Service, 1958 Mall Place, Benton Harbor, MI   on behalf of Sarett Nature Center. Space is limited to 16 participants . Reservations are accepted on a first come first served basis with receipt of deposit and completed Passenger Reservation Form.

FINAL PAYMENT:   November 1, 2011. A final payment invoice will be sent mid October.

 

COST-shown are the cash/check costs. In the event you wish to pay by credit card you must add 3% to the cost shown. Costs are based on the air fares and land rates in effect at time of printing (April 2011). In the event of increases due to currency fluctuation, air fare increases, fuel surcharges or tax increases, the costs must be passed on to the passenger.  

 

CANCELLATIONS and REFUNDS:  In the event a participant must cancel, the following penalties apply:

                      Sep 15 – Oct 31      $600.00pp       

                      Effective Nov   1       no refund

     

Trip Cancellation/Interruption insurance: is highly recommended. Pre-existing medical conditions will only be covered if insurance is purchased within 14 days of deposit. To cover pre-existing conditions the total cost of the trip plus taxes must be covered. Insurance premium is not refundable. Access America Insurance applications are available from our office.

 

PASSPORT and Mexican Tourist card requirement: Travelers must have a passport valid for at least 6 months upon return. A Tourist Card will be issued upon arrival in Cabo San Lucas.

 

HEALTH: Good physical and mental health are essential for the enjoyment of this trip. Please check with your personal physician in regard to your personal needs.

Travel Leaders/ Ludlow Travel   has contracted the services of   Journeys International and United Airlines for the operation of this tour.  Travel Leaders/ Ludlow Travel acts as an agent for passengers & the above named suppliers, airlines, hotels, transportation and other services supplied in this tour.   Sarett Nature Center and Travel Leaders /Ludlow Travel reserve the right, at their sole discretion,   to make changes in the itinerary and hotels should that become necessary, and are not   responsible to any person for expenses, loss of time, money or happenings resulting from a change of tour scheduling.   Sarett Nature Center and Travel Leaders/ Ludlow Travel reserve the right to accept, decline or retain any person as a member of the tour, and are not   responsible for any losses or damages of personal property, injuries, expenses or damages incurred or claimed by any tour member.
