Crane Creek, Ohio Spring Birding Trip

with Sarett Nature Center

May 8-10, 2012

Spring time is migration time, and time for us to go birding.   Once again we are going to focus our attention on the Crane Creek Area in Ohio.   This spring birding hotspot is located on the shore of Lake Erie, just east of Toledo.   It is directly south of the famed Point Pelee National Park in Canada.   The warblers that make Pelee so well known gather in the Crane Creek area before making the dangerous journey across Lake Erie.    Over 300 species including: cerulean, blackpoll and Connecticut warblers, Nelson’s sharp-tailed and Le Conte’s sparrows and a large variety of gulls, waders and waterfowl have been found around Crane Creek.

We will leave Sarett at 8:00 am on Tuesday, May 8 and make our way toward Crane Creek, with birding stops along the way.   Lunch will be at a fast food restaurant. After a day of birding we will check in at Our Guest Inn in Port Clinton, Ohio.

Wednesday will begin with breakfast at a nearby restaurant then we will head for the birds.   Our attention will be focused on Crane Creek, Magee Marsh and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge as well as wherever the rare bird reports might direct us.   Sarett will provide a picnic lunch.   Supper will be at your own expense.

After Breakfast Thursday we will begin birding our way west.   Maumee Bay State Park has an amazing boardwalk, which will lead us through marshes and swamps as we continue our search for birds.   Our birding will end at Sarett Nature Center in the early evening.
