April 11-16, 2010 Sarett Nature Center is travelling back to Great Smoky Mountain National Park once again. We will have opportunity to visit some favorite spots, such as Clingman’s Dome, Ramsey Cascade and Cades Cove. Sites visited will depend on desires and the physical ability of the group. Two vans will be involved so we should be able to accommodate everyone. April is a fine time to witness the profusion of woodland wildflowers that make this area special. See many kinds of trillium and other favorites that carpet the ground. On the way back to Michigan there will be an overnight stay in southern Ohio. This region is known as the Arc of Appalachia and features steep wooded hills, sandstone outcrops and some excellent wildflower viewing. This will allow us to break up the trip and explore a new area. Sunday…… Please arrive at the nature center by 6:30 am. We will make the 11 hour drive to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and arrive in time for dinner. Before checking into Carr’s cottages there will be a stop to shop for groceries... Monday through Wednesday……….Three days will be spent taking in the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. Scenic drives, ancient trees, giant boulders, fast flowing trout streams, abundant and varied wildflowers, and many forest trails will all be part of your experience. Thursday and Friday………..We will be departing Gatlinburg by 7 am on Thursday morning for the drive to southern Ohio. This area located 60 miles east of Cincinnati has state parks and nature preserves to explore. This we will do throughout the afternoon. Interestingly this area has been labeled the “Little Smokies”. Our overnight lodging will be at the Shawnee Resort at Shawnee State Park. We will have opportunity to walk another trail Friday morning before driving back to Michigan. Accommodations: We have stayed at Carr’s Cottages in Gatlinburg for many years. It is nestled on a hillside at the edge of town and has a mountain stream flowing past it. Carr’s is located within walking distance of many restaurants and shops. Rooms are equipped with a small kitchen and utensils. They have a heated pool. The Shawnee Resort consists of a large cedar and stone lodge building. Each room features all wood interior and a private balcony. There is an on-site restaurant. It is part of the Shawnee State Forest area and its 65 miles of trails. Cost: $ 425.00/ person. An extra $35.00 fee would be charged for a single supplement. This includes round trip transportation, accommodation at Carr’s Cottages and the Shawnee Resort, and the services of Sarett Nature Center naturalists. A deposit of $50.00 is required to hold your spot. If sending a check, mail it to: Sarett Nature Center, 2300 Benton Center Rd., Benton Harbor, MI 49022. Things to Bring: Sturdy walking/hiking shoes are essential for trail exploration. We’ll look for birds when out and about so having binoculars would be handy. Bring a day pack to hold water bottle, food, field guides etc. We walk trails in wet weather, so I encourage you to bring raingear and or an umbrella. Dress according to elevation since there can be warm temperatures in Gatlinburg and at the same time snow at Clingman’s Dome! Trip Leaders: Mindy Walker and Rob Pearce
