2014 Summer Classes for Kids

We have an exciting summer line-up of programs to explore our natural world.   Please join us!

YOUNG EXPLORERS
Ages 4 to 7

 

BUTTERFLIES & FELLOW FLUTTERBYS
June 12, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Learn about butterflies and other big beautiful flying insects.   Visit the butterfly house.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

ACTING LIKE ANIMALS
June 17, Tuesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Walk, talk, eat, dig, hop, and jump like all sorts of animals and learn about their behaviors.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

TERRIFIC TURTLES
June 20, Friday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Get to know the turtles of Sarett. Have turtle races and look for the giant snapper of Circle Pond. Fee $10, members $7.   

 

OOEY, GOOEY, STICKY & SLIMY
June 25, Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
From fish to frogs and salamanders to snails, follow the slime trail to learn about some of nature’s messiest residents. Fee $10, members $7.

 

FUNNY FISH
July 10, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Fish are truly amazing. They breathe underwater, they lay eggs and some are ferocious predators.   Enjoy activities and fun learning games.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

BUBBLES AND BUGS
July 15, Tuesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm 
Learn how some insects use “bubbles” to hide eggs, hide themselves, or breathe.   We’ll also spend time playing with bubbles.   Fee $10, members $7.                                                             

 

BEAKS & FEET  
July 23, Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Find out how an animal’s feet and/or beak determine where they live, what they eat and how they survive.   Have fun trying out some new feet of your own.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

HOWLERS
July 31, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Can you howl like a coyote?   What are coyotes and wolves trying to say when they howl?   Find out more about their lives and their communication.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

JUMPING FROGS
August 8, Friday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Learn about our friends, the frogs, with games and activities & a walk to frog habitat.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

ANIMAL SENSES
August 14, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Animals use all of their senses to survive including seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing and feeling.   We’ll see if our senses match an animal’s.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

MILKWEED AND MONARCHS
August 20, Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm
Learn about the monarch butterfly & visit the milkweed field to look for eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. Fee $10, members $7.

 

THE LAST HURRAH (for summer)!
Age 4 & up
August 22, Friday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
We’ll have a fun day of nature activities.   Bring a lunch, we’ll have cupcakes, prizes, certificates and fun!

1:00 pm to 2:30 pm   Stay for everyone’s favorite, MUCKIN IN THE MARSH.   Walk off-trail through the marsh.   You must wear old long pants, old tie shoes and you will get wet and muddy.   We will have a gentler walk and water activities for the youngest participants.  
9:30 am—1:00 pm   Fee   $12, members $7.
9:30 am—2:30 pm   Fee $15, members $10.

NATURE EXPLORERS

GARDENING FOR NATURE
Ages 8 to 12
June 13, Friday, 10:00 am to Noon
Learn the organic way to plant & care for container gardens for birds, butterflies & yourself.   Take a container garden home.   Fee $15, members $12.

 

JUNIOR RESTORATION RANGERS
Ages 8 & up
June 18, Wednesday, 9:30 am to Noon
Come help us help the habitat of Sarett. We’ll spend some time learning about and removing invasive species.   Prizes to the winning team.   Fee $8, members $5. Thanks for helping.

 

BIOMIMICRY
Ages 8 & up
June 19, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Investigate nature’s design of animals and plants for ideas to make new things for humans. $12/student, $8/members

 

FOSSIL FINDING
Ages 8 & up
June 24, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.   Try finding fossils along the Grand Mere beach.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

WORK AND PLAY DAY
Ages 7 to 12
July 3, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Help Sarett with trail work, animal care and other jobs.   There will be games, fun and snacks as well. Fee $12, members $8.

 

MAKE A NATURE VIDEO
Ages 8 & up
July 8, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Use your creativity to work as a team to make a Sarett nature video.   Learn some techniques that you can use on your own devices. Fee $12, members $8.

 

ADVENTURE DAY– EXPLORE BROWN SANCTUARY
Ages 8 & up
July 10, Thursday, 9:30 to Noon
Wear old clothes for an off trail explore at Brown.   Wear long pants for protection and bring water.   Fee $8, members $5.

 

BEGINNING GEOCACHING
Ages 10 & up
July 11,   Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Join us in this high tech treasure hunting game using GPS devices to locate hidden containers outside.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

THINGS WITH WINGS
Ages 8 & up
July 16, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
From birds to bats to butterflies, we’ll learn how nature has taken flight.   We’ll catch, observe & investigate these curious creatures and do our own experiments to further explore how to defy gravity.   Fee $12, members $10.

 

DIGGING INTO DIRT
Ages 8 & up
July 18, Friday, 9:30 am to Noon.    Plan to get down and dirty this morning finding out all about the soil and the organisms that live there.   Wear old clothes.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

WILD ABOUT WATER
Ages 8 & up
July 22, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
We all need water to survive.   Find out about the water cycle, run   experiments to learn about the properties of water, and then be prepared to get wet and wild. Fee $12, members $8.

 

HABITAT HUNT
Ages 8 & up
July 24, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Could you make it in the natural world? What do the animals need to survive?   Learn what makes good habitat.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

WONDERFUL WOODLANDS
Ages 8 & up
July 25, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
We all love a stroll through a shady, cool forest in the summer.   Explore Black’s Woods and the far properties of Sarett.   Wear long pants. Fee $12, members $8.

 

RECYCLING CRAFTS
Ages 8 & up
July 29, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
We will let our imaginations turn old things into new, useful items—like bird feeders, new paper, and art. We will learn   many ways we can reduce our waste trail. Fee $12, members $8.

 

NATURE’S CSI (Critter Scene Investigators)
Ages 8 & up
July 30, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
We will have a series of “crimes” with clues and evidence for kids to follow to determine what happened. Fee $15, members $10.

 

EVENING AT THE DUNES
Ages 8 & up
July 31, Thursday,   6:00 to 9:30 pm
Visit our local dune system.  Learn how they were formed, the animals that live there and how fast you can run up a dune.   Fee $12, members $10.

 

SNEAKY SNAKES
Ages 8 and up
August 1, Friday, 9:30   am to 2:00 pm
Snakes are great!   Learn about their habits, where they live, and what niche they fill in our ecosystems.   We will watch snakes eat, hold snakes (if you want) and walk looking for snakes. Fee $10, members $8

           

AWESOME ARMOR
Ages 8, 9, & 10
August 6, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Learn about all the cool ways animals have to defend themselves.   $10/student, members $8.

 

SOUNDS OF SCIENCE
Ages 10 & up
August 7, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Kids will make an instrument, discover musicians among the animals and discover the science behind how animals hear and are heard. Fee $12, members $10

 

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS
Ages 8 & up
August 12, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Welcome to the gruesome world of insect eating plants.   Learn which one grows in our area with area expert Ron Dudek.   Fee $15, members $12.

           

SARETT OVERNIGHT
Ages 8 & up
August 14 & 15, Thursday 7:00 pm until Friday 9:00 am
Enjoy walks, call owls, watch stars and sleep the night in the nature center building.   Evening snack & breakfast included.   Fee $28, members $22. Class size limited.   Choose only one overnight.

 

MIGHTY MONARCH
Ages 8 & up
August 19, Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:30 am Learn about the monarch butterfly & visit the milkweed field to look for eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. Fee $10, members $7.

Build a Wooden Bird Feeder
June 25, Wednesday, 10:00 am to 12:30 pm or 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm Today’s wooden bird feeder is guaranteed to make the birds happy. $25/project, $22/member.

 

Rubber Band Drag Racer Car
July 2, Wednesday, 10 am to noon or 1 to 3 pm
Make a dragster that travels up to 25 feet just on rubber band power.   Use the band saw and drill press. $22/student, $20/member.

 

Create Wooden Pens
August 5, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
A beginning woodworking class working on the lathe making two wooden pens to take home. $40/student, $35/member.

KAYAKING FOR KIDS

Beginning Kayaking

Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore North Lake and the St. Joseph River.    Fee $30, members $25.

Kayak the Kalamazoo
July 1, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Kayak from the dam to the pipeline access.   Must have Sarett kayak experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

Kayak the Dowagiac
July 9, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Paddle from M-62 to Dodd Park.   Must have Sarett paddling experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

Kayak the Paw Paw River
July 17, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
Paddle the Paw Paw from County Line to Watervliet. Must have Sarett paddling experience. Fee $20, member $15.

 

St Joe Evening Paddle
July 24, Thursday, 4:00 to 8:30 pm
Kayak the St. Joe River from Berrien Springs to Jasper Dairy Access.   Must have Sarett kayaking experience. Fee $20, members $15.

 

One Day Kayak Lesson
August 8. Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Try your hand at kayaking at North Lake Park to learn the basics.   Fee $15. members $12.

 

Paddling Pipestone Lake
August 13, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Enjoy a gentle paddle on this small inland lake.   We’ll look for wildlife and play some games to improve our paddling skills.   Must have Sarett kayaking experience.   Fee $15, members $10.

Please call Sarett at 269-927-4832 for more information on any of our classes.   It is important for the enjoyment of all students that your child be the appropriate age for the class.   Please dress appropriately for classes, wear a cap, good walking shoes & bring a drink and lunch if class is over the noon hour.   Flip–flops are not a good shoe for walking on nature trails.   Please be aware Sarett naturalists want your child to have a great time so choose the classes that your child will enjoy.
