SUMMER CLASSES FOR KIDS


 

WORK & PLAY DAY June 17, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 7 to 12.   Help Sarett with trail work, animal care and other jobs.   Games, fun and snacks, too.   Fee $14, members $10.

 

GARDENING FOR NATURE  June 18, Thursday, 9:30 am to noon for ages 8 to 12.  Learn the organic way to plant and care for container gardens for butterflies, hummingbirds and yourself.  Help Sarett plant native plants.  Make a project to take home.  Fee $15, members $12.

 

MUCKIN’ IN THE MARSH  June 18, Thursday, 12:30 to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12.   Walk off-trail through the marsh.   You must wear old long pants, old tie shoes, and you will get wet and muddy to the waist.   Junior Muckin’ for ages 6 & 7 will be held at the same time.  Fee $10, members $7.

 

FROLICKING FROGS June 19, Friday, 9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7. Let’s learn about frogs, how they grow, what they eat and what they sound like.   We’ll visit a pond looking for frogs and tadpoles.   Guaranteed to be a hopping good time.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

BEGINNING KAYAK CLASS June 23 & 24, Tuesday & Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 & up.  Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore the lake at Grand Mere State Park and the St. Joseph River. Fee $30, members $22.

 

ANTS, ANTS, ANTS June 25, Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7.   Ants live all around us. Let’s learn how they live, what they eat, why they are an insect and we will take an ant walk and make a craft.   Fee $10, member $7.

 

TRAILBLAZERS June 26, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 & up. Learn the basics of hiking including using a compass, map, GPS and proper trail etiquette.  Hike to the far edges of the nature center property.   Fee $14, members $10.

 

BEGINNING CANOE CLASS June 30 & July 1, Tuesday & Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 & up.  Learn the basics of canoeing and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore a lake at Grand Mere State Park and the St. Joseph River.  Fee $30, member $22.

 

BUSY BEES July 2, Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7.   Flowers need bees.   Learn about honey bees and how they help flowers and us.   We will have some tasty honey treats.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

POND EXPLORE  July 3, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 8 & up. Compare the animal and plant life of several of Sarett’s ponds. Wear old clothes! $14, members $10.

 

KAYAK THE BLACK RIVER  July 7, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 & up. Paddle along this wild & narrow river near South Haven.   Must have had a beginning kayak class from Sarett.   Fee $20, members $16.

 

TURTLES & TORTOISES July 8, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7. Let’s learn about these interesting animals. We’ll have several live specimens, games and activities.   Fee $10, member $7.

 

SOAP CARVING July 9 & 10, Thursday & Friday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for ages 10 & up. Turn a bar of soap into a snowman, a pine tree or even a cardinal. We’ll make carving tools, practice carving techniques and work on a final project. Fee $16, members $12.

 

DOING THE DUNES July 10, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 & up. Find out how our land was shaped by the mighty glaciers. Activities at the nature center and a visit to the Lake Michigan shoreline. Sponsored by Preserve The Dunes Association.   Fee $8, members $6.

 

EEK! A MOUSE!   July 14, Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7.   Learn about the wonderful world of mice.   We’ll play games, make a craft and learn about our furry friends.   Fee $10, member $7.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW RIVER July 15, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up.  Kayak from Hartford to County Line Road.   Must have had a Sarett kayak course.   Fee $18, members $14.

 

SARETT OVERNIGHT  July 16 & 17, Thursday & Friday, Thursday, 7:00 pm to Friday, 9:00 am for ages 8 & up. Play flashlight scavenger hunt, call owls, watch stars and sleep the night in the new nature center building.  Evening snack and breakfast included.   Fee $28, members $22.

 

JUNIOR NATURE CRAFTS  July 21, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 7 & 8.   Using items from nature, make several craft projects to take home.  Fee $20, members $16.

 

THE FOREST AROUND US   July 21, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 and up.   Explore Sarett’s forest. Use the new tree top tower for observation and forest experiments.    Fee $14, members $10.

 

NUTS ABOUT SQUIRRELS   July 22, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7.  Learn about squirrels through games, activities and a nature walk.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

 

KAYAK or CANOE THE KALAMAZOO July 23, Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up.  Paddle   from D Avenue to Plainwell.   Must have Sarett paddling experience. Fee $25, members $20.

 

LET’S GO GEOCACHING  July 24, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 and up.   Learn how to use a Global Position System Unit (GPS).   Take part in a scavenger hunt/hike/outdoor adventure— with a technological twist.  Fee $14, members $10.

 

SLITHERING SNAKES July 28, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 and up.   Let’s do an in-depth study of snakes.   Meet all the snakes that live in the building and explore the trails for wild ones.   Fee $14, members $10.

 

NATURE CRAFTS  July 28, 29 & 30, Tuesday to Thursday, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for ages 9-12.   Make several nature—inspired craft projects. Fee $25, members $20.

 

SPIDERS! July 30, Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 for ages 4 to 7. Study these fascinating creatures. We’ll study how they hunt, what they eat and where they live.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

KAYAK OR CANOE THE DOWAGIAC   July 31, Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up.   Paddle from M-62 to Dodd Park.   Must have Sarett paddling experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

BEECH TO BEACH August 4, Tuesday,  9:30 am to 1:00 pm for ages 8 & up.   Explore the beaches, dunes and water of Van Buren State Park. We will get wet.   Fee $10, members $6.   Sponsored by Preserve The Dunes.

 

NATURE’S SONGS  August 4, Tuesday, 4:00 to 9:00 pm for ages 8 and up.   Bring your listening ears to learn about the many insects, frogs, coyotes, owls and foxes who all make sounds.   Learn why and when to listen. Fee $14, members $10.

 

ZOO DAY August 5, Wednesday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for ages 8 & up. Spend the day at Binder Park Zoo. We’ll enjoy the African safari display.   Parents are welcome. Fee $28, members $22.

 

FLY A KITE  August 6, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 to 10.   Learn what makes a good kite then build your own. Wish for a gentle breeze to try flying your creations.   Fee $20, members $15.

 

BUGS DON’T BUG ME!   August 7,  Friday. 9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 for ages 4 to 7 years old.   Legs, antennae, body parts, and wings—we will look at it all plus catch lots of insects. Fee $10, members $7.

 

KAYAK THE ST JOSEPH RIVER  August 7, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 & up.   Paddle from Berrien Springs to Jasper Dairy Road Landing.   Previous Sarett paddling experience needed. Fee $20, members $15.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW RIVER  August 11, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 and up.   Paddle the Paw Paw from County Line to Watervliet. Must have Sarett paddling experience.   Fee $20, members $15.

 

FOSSIL HUNTING   August 12, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm for ages 9 & up. Travel to Grand Mere State Park to hunt for fossils on the shore of Lake Michigan. Visit a local gravel pit to find fossils sealed away in rocks.  Fee $15, members $11.

 

ADVANCED KITE DAY August 13, Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Learn more about why flight and kites work.   Make an advanced kite design to take home.   Fly a variety of kites.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

KAYAK THE KALAMAZOO  August 14, Friday, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm for ages 10 & up. Kayak from M-89 to New Richman on the mighty Kalamazoo.   Must have Sarett kayak experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

THE FOREST AROUND US   August 14, Friday,  9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7. Learn about the trees and animals that live in a forest.   We’ll use the tree top walkway for observation. Fee $10, member $7.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW RIVER  August 18, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 and up.   Paddle the river between Lawrence & Hartford. A new experience for those who have Sarett paddling experience. Fee $20/members $15.

 

ROCK AND ROLL  August 19 & 20, Wednesday & Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12. Study rocks at a gravel pit, the beach, Ross Preserve and make a rock collection.   Fee $15, members $12.

 

ADVANCED MUCKIN’ IN THE MARSH  August 21, Friday, 9:30 am to noon for ages 9 & up. Be prepared to go deep into the wild wetlands of Sarett.   You must wear long pants & old tie shoes.  Fee $8, members $6.

 

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT  August 21, Friday, 9:00 to 10:30 pm for ages 5 & up. Walk, listen & watch for creatures. Campfire, stories & snack. Parents welcome. Fee $8, members $6.
