                SARETT NATURE CENTER’S 2012

Summer Classes For Kids

BEGINNING KAYAK CLASS.   June 12 & 13, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm & Wednesday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore North Lake and the St. Joseph River.   Fee $30, members $22.

 

DAY OF NATURE DRAWING.   June 13, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 and older.   Learn a few tricks for drawing things in nature and spend some outdoors time practicing.   Fee $10, members $8.

 

NUTS ABOUT SQUIRRELS. June 14, Thursday, 9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7.   Learn the local squirrels, their amazing behaviors and adaptations. Fee $10, members $7.

 

GARDENING FOR NATURE.   June 15, Friday, 10:00 am to noon for ages 8 to 12.   Learn the organic way to plant & care for container gardens for birds, butterflies & yourself.   Take a project home.   Fee $15, members $12.

 

HOO, HOO, HOO SAYS THE OWL. June 19, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7. Learn about the owls of Sarett.   Games, activities and a craft.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

BEGINNING GEOCACHING.   June 20, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Join us in this high-tech treasure hunting game played using GPS devices to locate hidden containers outside.   Fee $12, member $8.

 

BEGINNING KAYAK CLASS.   June 21 & 22, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm & Friday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore North Lake and the St. Joseph River.   Fee $30, members $22.

 

FOSSIL FINDERS. June 26, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12.   See the Michigan Basin Fossils display, & Sarett’s samples and then travel to Lions Park & Grand Mere to find fossils. Bring a lunch.   Fee $12, member $8.

 

MUCKIN’ IN THE MARSH. June 27, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am for ages 6-12.   Walk off-trail through the marsh. You must wear old long pants, old tie shoes, and you will get wet and muddy.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

KAYAK THE KALAMAZOO. June 28, Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up. Kayak from the dam to pipeline access.   Must have Sarett kayak experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

WORK & PLAY DAY. June 29, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 7 to 12.   Help Sarett with trail work, animal care and other jobs.   Games, fun and snacks, too.   Fee $12, members $10.

 

SLUGS, SNAILS & SLIME. July 3, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm for ages 4 to 7. They are cute, they are everywhere & they are great because they are slimy. Learn more.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

BACKYARD BALLISTICS. July 6, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Canons, model rockets, missiles, catapults, marshmallow shooters—all the things that kids love to investigate. With a strong emphasis on safety, learn the science of bang & boom and how it relates to nature.   Fee $20, members $16.

 

CHICAGO ADVENTURE: July 10. Tuesday. 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Spend a day in the windy city visiting Shedd’s Aquarium and Oceanarium. We’ll travel to the big city by way of the South Shore Train. For ages 9 & up. Fee $55, members $50. Please register by June 10.

 

SNEAKY SNAKES. July 11.   Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for age 4-7.   Let’s learn about these amazing animals. We will have many live specimens.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW RIVER.   July 12, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 and up.   Paddle the Paw Paw from County Line Road to Watervliet.   Must have Sarett paddling experience.   Fee $20, members $15.

 

TREASURE QUEST. July 13, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 & up.   Using GPS units, nature clues, maps and hints, join us for this A to Z treasure hunt. May the best team win.   Fee $15, members $10.

 

TURTLES!   July 17, Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Get to know the turtles of Sarett.   Have turtle races and look for the giant snapper of Circle Pond.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

JUNIOR NATURE CRAFTS.   July 18, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 7 & 8.   Using items from nature, make several craft projects to take home.   Fee $20, members $16.

 

NATIVE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. July 19, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 9 & up.   Learn about the Native Americans of our area including games, food and their connection to nature.   Fee $15, members $10.

 

LITTLEST NATURALISTS. July 20, Friday, 10:00 to 11:00 am for ages 2 to 4 with an adult.   Become acquainted with the animals of Sarett and a walk on the tree top walkway.   Fee $5, members $2.

 

KAYAK THE DOWAGIAC.   July 24, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up.   Paddle from M-62 to Dodd Park.   Must have Sarett paddling experience. Fee $25, members $20.

 

BEECH TO BEACH. July 25, Wednesday,   9:30 am to 1:00 pm for ages 8 & up.   Explore the beaches, dunes and water of Van Buren State Park. We will get wet.   Fee $10, members $6.   Sponsored by Preserve The Dunes.

 

DRAGONS AND DAMSELS.   July 26, Thursday,   9:30 am to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Take a closer look at the “dragon” flies and “damsel” flies of Sarett.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

AMAZING RACE. July 27, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 and up.   Plan to play games and contests to test your nature savvy. You may get wet and dirty.   Fee $25/members $20.

 

 

CRAZY CATERPILLARS. July 31, Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Caterpillars are eating machines. Learn their defenses, how they survive and what they become.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

NATURE’S RECYCLERS. August 1, Wednesday, 9:30 to Noon for ages 8 & up.   Be informed!   Learn nature’s recycling methods and how you can recycle and be part of the solution.   Fee $8, members $5.

 

ST. JOE EVENING PADDLE.   August 1, Wednesday, 4:00 to 8:30 pm for ages 10 & up.   Kayak or canoe the St. Joe River from Berrien Springs to Jasper Dairy access.   Fee $20, members $15.

 

SARETT OVERNIGHT.   August 2 & 3, Thursday & Friday, Thursday, 7:00 pm to Friday, 9:00 am for ages 8 & up.   Enjoy walks, call owls, watch stars and sleep the night in the nature center building. Evening snack & breakfast included.   Fee $28, members $22.   Class size limited.   Choose only one Sarett overnight.

JUMPING FROGS & HOPPING TOADS. August 8, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Can you jump like a frog or hop like toad? Learn songs, life cycles and see live amphibians.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW from Sarett to Brown Sanctuary. August 9, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 & up.   Try this wilderness stretch of the river.   Be ready to get out and over logs.   You need Sarett kayak experience.   Fee $20, members $15.

 

BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES. August 10, Friday, 9:30 am to Noon for ages 8 & up.   Learn the native butterflies of our area, visit the butterfly house, and investigate the gardens.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

MIGHTY MONARCH. August 10, Friday, 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Learn about the monarch butterfly & visit the milkweed field to look for eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. Fee $10, members $7.

 

FOSSIL FINDING. August 14, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm for ages 8 and up. Try your hand at finding fossils along the Grand Mere beach. Fee $10, members $7.

 

SARETT OVERNIGHT. DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?   August 16, Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7. Use magnifiers, binoculars and microscopes to view the world.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

ROSS PRESERVE BLOWOUT . August 16, Thursday, 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm for ages 8 & up.   Visit this unique habitat.   Look for tracks, artifacts, and other signs of life.   Fee $10, members $7.   Sponsored by Preserve the Dunes.

 

ROCK AND ROLL. August 17, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12. Study rocks at a gravel pit and the beach.   Make a rock collection.   Fee $15, members $12.

 

ULTIMATE NATURE GAMES. August 21, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for 10 & up.   Test your nature knowledge and skills during today’s mix of games and activities.   Wear old clothes (you may get wet).   Fee $15, members $10.

 

MICHIGAN PREDATORS. August 22,   Wednesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm for ages 8 & up.   Hawks, snakes, insects, fox, bats and coyotes are all predators of our area. Learn what they do to survive.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

EVENING AT THE DUNES. August 22, Wednesday, 6:00 to 9:30 pm for ages 8 & up.   Visit our local dune system. Learn how they were formed, the animals that live there and how fast can you run up a dune.   Fee $12, members $10.   Sponsored by Preserve the Dunes.

 

GOING BATTY.   August 23, Thursday, 9:30 to 11:00 am or 1:00 to 2:30 pm for ages 4-7.   Learn about these night creatures—where they live, what they eat and when they fly.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

ADVANCED MUCKIN’ IN THE MARSH. August 24, Friday, 9:30 am to 11:30 am for ages 9 & up.   Be prepared to go deep into the wild wetlands of Sarett.   You must wear long pants & old tie shoes. Fee $8, members $6.

 

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT. August 24. Friday. 8:30 to 10:00 pm for ages 5 & up.   Follow the torch lit trail with a parent to night time stations as you walk, listen & watch for creatures. Fee (adults and children) $5, members $3
