SUMMER CLASSES FOR KIDS


SKETCHING WORKSHOP. June 17. Tuesday. 1:00 to 4:00 pm for teens.   Learn sketching techniques using nature as your inspiration.   Instructor—Carol Johnson.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

WORK & PLAY DAY. June 18. Wednesday. 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 7 to 12.   Help Sarett with trail work, animal care and other jobs.   Games, fun and snacks, too.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

SNEAKY SNAKES! June 19. Thursday. 9:30 am to 11:30 am for ages 4 & 5. Let’s learn about these amazing animals. We will have several live specimens. Fee $9, members $6.

GARDENING FOR NATURE. June 20. Friday. 9:30 am to noon for ages 8 to 12. Learn the organic way to plant and care for container gardens for butterflies, hummingbirds and yourself. Help Sarett plant native plants. Make projects to take home. Fee $14, members $10.

 

MUCKIN’ IN THE MARSH. June 20. Friday. 12:30 to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12.   Walk off-trail through the marsh.   You must wear old long pants, old tie shoes, and be prepared to get wet and muddy to the waist.  

JUNIOR MUCKIN’ for ages 6 & 7 will be held at the same time. Fee $9, members $6.

 

BEGINNING KAYAK CLASS. June 24 & 25. Tuesday & Wednesday. 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 10 & up. Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore the lake at Grand Mere State Park and the St. Joseph River. Fee $25, members $20.

 

FUNGUS AMONG US. June 26. Thursday. 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 & up.   Learn about the mushrooms around us. We’ll collect, make spore prints and learn their importance. Fee $12, members $8.

 

LIFE IN A LOG.   June 27. Friday. 9:30 to 11:30 am for ages 4 & 5.   What’s good about an old, rotting log?   Lots!   Learn about the bugs, centipedes, slugs, and salamanders that use old logs. Fee $9, members $6.

 

LIFE IN A LOG. June 27. Friday. 12:30 to 3:00 pm for ages 6 & 7. Lots of great critters live in rotting logs. Discover what by exploring old logs at the nature center. Fee $10, members $7.

SLIME TIME. July 8. Tuesday. 9:30 to 11:30 am for ages 4 & 5.   Slugs, snails, worms, salamanders and frogs are all slimy!   Find out why. We’ll make our own slime.   Fee $9,   members $6.

KAYAK THE BLACK RIVER.   July 9. Wednesday. 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 10 & up. Paddle along this wild, narrow river near South Haven.   Must have kayak experience. Fee $18, members $15.

BEECH TO BEACH. July 11. Friday.   9:30 am to 1:00 pm for ages 7 to 12.   Explore the beaches, dunes and water of Van Buren State Park. We will get wet.   Fee $8, members $5.   Sponsored by Preserve The Dunes.

 

RUSS FOREST WALK. July 15. Tuesday. 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 8 to 12.   Discover the big trees in this local natural area.   Fee $14, members $10.

 

KAYAK THE PAW PAW RIVER. July 16. Wednesday. 9:30 am to 3:30 pm for ages 10 & up. Kayak Hartford to County Line Road. You must have taken a kayak course.   Fee $15, members $10.

 

SARETT OVERNIGHT.   July 17 & 18. Thursday & Friday. Thursday, 7:00 pm to Friday, 9:00 am for ages 8 & up. Play flashlight scavenger hunt, call owls, watch stars and sleep the night in the new nature center building. Evening snack and breakfast included.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

DOING THE DUNES. July 22. Tuesday. 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8 & up. Find out how our land was shaped by the mighty glaciers. Activities at the nature center and a visit to the Lake Michigan shoreline. Sponsored by Preserve The Dunes. Fee $7, members $5.

 

FLY A KITE.   July 23. Wednesday. 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for ages 8 and up.   Learn what makes a good kite then build your own. Wish for a gentle breeze to try flying your creations.   Fee $20, members $15.

ROCK AND ROLL. August 20 & 21. Wednesday & Thursday. 9:30 am to 2:00 pm for ages 8-12. Study rocks at a gravel pit, the beach, Ross Preserve and make a rock collection.   Fee $13, members $10.

 

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT. August 22. Friday. 9:00 to 10:30 pm for ages 5 & up. Walk, listen & watch for creatures. Campfire, stories & snack. Parents welcome. Fee $7, members $5.
