Welcome to Sarett’s Summer Classes!

We have an exciting summer line-up of programs to explore our natural world.   Please join us!

 YOUNG EXPLORERS

 Ages 4 to 7

 

DIGGING FOR DINOSAURS
June 12, Friday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Dinosaurs are long gone but they are still exciting to learn about.   We’ll play games and have activities that will help us understand these long ago reptiles.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

WACKY WORMS
June 18, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn about underground life of a worm.    Fee $10, members $7.

 

TERRIFIC TURTLES
June 23, Tuesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Get to know the turtles of Sarett. Have turtle races and look for the giant snapper of Circle Pond. Fee $10, members $7.  

 

WALK THIS WAY
July 1, Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Can you walk like a bear? Can you hop like a rabbit? Learn how different animals move. Fee $10, members $7.

 

HOO, HOO, WHO STAYS AWAKE ALL NIGHT?
July 9, Thursday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn about the owls of Sarett.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

CHEEKY CHIPMUNKS
July 17, Friday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn all about the chipmunks that live in our backyards.   Where they live, what they eat and what makes them special.    Fee $10, members $7.                                                            


GOING BATTY
July 21, Tuesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn about the interesting lives of bats.   Crafts, games and a walk.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE ?
July 29, Wednesday, 9:30 –11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Use magnifiers, binoculars and microscopes to view the world.   Fee $10, members $7.  

 

MINI MAMMALS
August 6, Thursday, 9:30 –11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn about our friends, the mice, shrews, voles and moles with games and activities & a walk.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

SIX LEGS + FOUR WINGS = INSECTS
August 13, Thursday, 9:30—11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Discover the wonderful world of insects.   Use a sweep net to find your own.    Fee $10, members $7.

 

MILKWEED AND MONARCHS
August 19, Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 am or 12:30-2:00 pm.
Learn about the monarch butterfly & visit the milkweed field to look for eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. Fee $10, members $7.

 

THE LAST HURRAH (for summer)!
            Age 4 & up
August 21, Friday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.
We’ll have a fun day of nature activities.   Bring a lunch, we’ll have cupcakes, prizes, certificates and fun!
1:00 pm to 2:30 pm   Stay for everyone’s favorite, MUCKIN IN THE MARSH.   Walk off-trail through the marsh.   You must wear old long pants, old tie shoes and you will get wet and muddy.   We will have a gentler walk and water activities for the youngest participants.  
9:30 am—1:00 pm   Fee   $12, members $7.
9:30 am—2:30 pm   Fee $15, members $10.

NATURE EXPLORERS

GARDENING FOR NATURE  
Ages 8 to 12
June 11, Thursday, 10:00 am to Noon.
Learn the organic way to plant & care for container gardens for birds, butterflies & yourself.   Take a container garden home.   Fee $15, members $12.

 

BEGINNING GEOCACHING
Ages 10 & up
June 16,   Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.  
Join us in this high tech treasure hunting game using GPS devices to locate hidden containers outside.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

JUNIOR RESTORATION RANGERS
Ages 8 & up
June 19, Friday, 9:30 am to Noon.
Come help us help the habitat of Sarett. We’ll spend some time learning about and removing invasive species.   Prizes to the winning team.   Fee $8, members $5. Thanks for helping.

 

WORK AND PLAY DAY  
Ages 7 to 12
June 24, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.   
Help Sarett with trail work, animal care and other jobs.   There will be games, fun and snacks as well.   Fee $12, members $8.

 

POND STUDY
Ages 8 & up
June 25, Thursday, 9:30 to Noon
Nothing is more fun than exploring the pond with dip nets and magnifiers. Wear old clothes—we sometimes get wet.   Fee $10, members $7

 

FOSSIL FINDING
Ages 8 & up
June 30, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.    Try finding fossils along the Grand Mere beach.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

TRASH TO TREASURES
Ages 8 & up
July 3, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Learn to do your part for your earth. We’ll learn about composting, recycling, reducing, make a craft and have fun.   Fee $12, members $8

 

ADVENTURE DAY– EXPLORE ROSS PRESERVE
Ages 8 & up
July 7, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.   Wear old clothes for an off trail explore at Ross Preserve.   Wear long pants for protection & bring water & lunch.   Fee $8, members $5.

 

BEACH DAY
Ages 8 & up
July 14, Tuesday, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Join us for a beach explore along Lake Michigan shoreline. We will get wet to our knees, play some games and discover the beach rocks.   Bring water and lunch. Fee $10, members $7.

 

TREMENDOUS TREES
Ages 8 & up
July 15, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Learn about all the wonderful trees of our area. Find out how they help animals and us. Fee $12, members $10.

 

DON’T BUG ME
Ages 8 & up
July 16, Thursday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Put 6 legs, 3 body parts, 2 pairs of wing together and what do you have? An insect.   Learn just how many bugs there are out there. Use sweep nets to catch, study and release. Fee $12, members $8

 

EVENING AT THE DUNES
Ages 8 & up
July 16, Thursday,   6:00 to 9:30 pm.   Visit our local dune system.   Learn how they were formed, the animals that live there and how fast you can run up a dune.   Fee $12, members $10.

 

MUSKRATS, BEAVER, OTTER & MINK
Ages 8 & up
July 22, Wednesday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.   Learn about these wetland mammals—what they eat, where they live and how they survive. Go on an adventure walk looking for signs of these animals.   Wear old clothes.   Fee $10, members $7.

 

TRIP TO THE ZOO
Ages 8 & up
July 24, Friday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm
Travel with us to the Potawatomi Zoo in South Bend.   See lions, tigers, chimps and more. Ride the train.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

CRAFTY KIDS
Ages 8 & up
July 28, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Learn to make paper with Sue Nuti, practice screen printing, weaving and try your hand at other crafts.  Fee $20, members $15.

 

WIND AND WINGS
Ages 8 & up
July 30, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
From birds to bats to butterflies. We’ll learn about flight, air currents & test some theories of flight.   Visit the butterfly house. Fee $12, members $8.

 

NATURE’S CSI (Critter Scene Investigators)
Ages 8 & up
July 31, Friday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
We will have a series of mysteries with clues and evidence for kids to follow to determine what happened. Fee $15, members $12

 

SWEET SCIENCE
Ages 8 & up
August 4, Tuesday, 9:30 am to Noon or 12:30 to 3:00 pm
Study sweet science by doing experiments with candy. There could be some tasting involved. $10/student, members $8.

 

MIGHTY MONARCH
Ages 8 & up
August 5, Wednesday, 9:30 to 11:30 am Learn about the monarch butterfly. Find out what you can do to help monarchs.   Visit the milkweed field to look for eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. Fee $10, members $7.

 

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS
Ages 8 & up
August 11, Tuesday,   9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Welcome to the gruesome world of insect eating plants.   Learn which one grows in our area with area expert Ron Dudek.   Fee $15, members $12

 

SARETT OVERNIGHT
Ages 8 & up
August 13 & 14, Thursday 7:00 pm until Friday 9:00 am.  
Enjoy walks, call owls, watch stars and sleep the night in the nature center building.   Evening snack & breakfast included.   Fee $28, members $22. Class size limited.  

 

SNEAKY SNAKES
Ages 8 and up
August 18, Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Snakes are great!   Learn about their habits, where they live, and what niche they fill in our ecosystems.   We will watch snakes eat, hold snakes (if you want) and walk looking for snakes. Fee $12, $10/member

 

THE LAST HURRAH (for summer)!
Age 4 & up

Build a Wooden Bird Feeder
June 18, Thursday, 10:00 am to 12:30 pm or 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm
Today’s wooden bird feeder is guaranteed to make the birds happy. $25/project, $22/member

 

Rubber Band Drag Racer Car
July 9, Thursday, 10 am to noon or 1 to 3 pm
Make a dragster that travels up to 25 feet just on rubber band power.         Use the band saw and drill press. $22/student, $20/member

 

Create Wooden Pens
August 6, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
A beginning woodworking class working on the lathe making two wooden pens to take home. $40/student, $35/member

KAYAKING FOR KIDS
10 & up REGISTRATION

Beginning Kayaking
June 16 , Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm & June 17,   Wednesday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm
Learn the basics of kayaking and study aquatic life at the same time.   We’ll explore North Lake and the St. Joseph River.    Fee $30, members $25.

 

Beginning Kayaking
June 25, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm & June 26,   Friday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm

Kayak the Kalamazoo
July 2, Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Kayak from the dam to the pipeline access.   Must have Sarett kayak experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

 

Kayak Chain-o-Lakes State Park
July 10, Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm  
Explore 9 small lakes and the stream that connects them. Near Ft. Wayne, IN. Bring a lunch, water & sunscreen.   Fee $35, members $30.

 

Kayak the Paw Paw River
July 23, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
Paddle the Paw Paw from County Line to Watervliet. Must have Sarett paddling experience. Fee $20, member $15.

 

One Day Kayak Lesson
August 4. Tuesday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Try your hand at kayaking at North Lake Park to learn the basics.   Fee $15. members $12.

 

Kayak the Dowagiac
August 7, Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
Paddle from M-62 to Dodd Park.   Must have Sarett paddling experience.   Fee $25, members $20.

                       

Paddling Madron Lake
August 20, Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm
Enjoy a gentle paddle on this small inland lake.   We’ll look for wildlife and play some games to improve our paddling skills.   Must have Sarett kayaking experience.   Fee $15, members $10.

Please call Sarett at 269-927-4832 for more information on any of our classes.   It is important for the enjoyment of all students that your child be the appropriate age for the class.   Please dress appropriately for classes, wear a cap, good walking shoes & bring a drink and lunch if class is over the noon hour.   Flip–flops are not a good shoe for walking on nature trails.   Please be aware Sarett naturalists want your child to have a great time so choose the classes that your child will enjoy.
